One of the goals of Scouting is to provide a positive, fun
experience for boys. Fun and a sense of accomplishment are very important in
retaining Scouts in the program. To attain that sense of accomplishment each boy
must work on rank advancement. Your son will learn that achievement of advancement
is fun!
The advancement requirements for Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class ranks
are outlined in the Scout Handbook. These requirements may be passed to one of the
Junior Leaders (young adults). The non-camping oriented requirements may be passed
at anytime other than at a Scout meeting. Just call a junior leader and arrange a
time.
Merit badges are a key part of earning the Honor ranks of Star, Life, and Eagle.
The Troop distributes a booklet that reviews advancement requirements and includes a list
of merit badge counselors. Instructions for passing a merit badge are a part of that
booklet. In general, merit badges are passed to someone who has knowledge of the
subject matter and who has
been approved by the Troop Committee and/or local council. Camping and Cooking
merit badges are passed only to the Scoutmaster. To receive the rank of Eagle
Scout from Troop 70, each Scout must complete all the requirements in the Boy Scout
Handbook.
Several merit badges required for Eagle are passed only at summer camp, such as
Swimming, Lifesaving, and Environmental Science. There are several other camp craft
and outdoor oriented merit badges that can be completed in one week of camp and are highly
recommended.
The Troop appreciates the involvement of parents in the merit badge process. If
you have expertise or knowledge of a particular merit and would like to serve as a merit
badge counselor, please contact the Advancement Chairman or the Scoutmaster.
